The Future of Transportation: Optimizing for People, Planet, and Profit

The CASE megatrends (connected, autonomous, shared/services, and electric) are massively disrupting the automotive and transportation industries. Companies and countries are scrambling to get up to speed on them before their competitors completely disrupt them. Right now, these trends are roughly at the same level of maturity as the web was in 1995. So where are these new digital technologies taking us? What is coming down the line, and how will these changes affect my organization, my wallet, and the planet? SAP Global VP, Futurist, and Innovation Evangelist Tom Raftery unpacks these forces to show how these megatrends are transforming the lives of individuals, enterprises, and the planet for the benefit of all.

Strategic Agility: Leading Through Uncertainty

Today’s business environment is no longer described as having an “ebb and flow” but rather a permanent “whitewater” condition. This increased speed of change has caused a movement from discrete-event strategic planning to more dynamic planning. However, many organizations struggle with the ability to stay nimble to respond to rapid market changes because of a variety of factors. This session explores two common barriers to agility, provides tools to overcome these barriers, and describes best practices in building adaptability in strategic initiatives.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Learn how to move from prediction to managing uncertainty.

  • Understand how to monitor the external environment to prepare for change.

  • Identify ways in which to instill a culture of strategic agility.

Over the past decade, Continental Automotive has experienced tremendous growth both organically and through acquisitions. As a result, its ERP landscape was complex and full of both disparate processes and data models. Recognizing the need to consolidate its complex, multiple-instance SAP landscape into key regional systems around the world, the SPIRIT project was born. SPIRIT (Strategic Process Integration Rolled out with an International Template) is a worldwide endeavor to combine 25 Continental Automotive systems and more than 130 locations into five systems worldwide. Our story is the narrative of a partnership between business and information technology, coming together with a single project management methodology to successfully consolidate systems worldwide.

Data Ownership and Quality with InfoSteward

Maintaining data quality in SAP was decentralized and required manual efforts using Microsoft Access and Excel. This approach included risks that included incorrect data analysis, process disruptions due to resource turnover, and lack of holistic data quality visibility to the center of excellence (COE). The solution for General Motors Customer Care & Aftersales (GM CCA) was to implement SAP Information Steward to centralize data quality oversight to the global COE team. SAP Information Steward was implemented to support the Australia SAP instance. With this implementation, resources are focused on prioritized data quality issues that drive critical business processes by using a trusted data source and making data quality visible to business leadership. Key learnings since implementation are driving current continuous improvement projects, which involve innovative data quality management to target workflow and backorder resolution. Additional efforts include data management to support the newly implemented SAP Extended Warehouse Management, implementation of additional SAP Information Steward functionality to drive data ownership accountability, and implementation of a sandbox functionality to allow the business to finesse data quality views before engaging IT support.

Key Business Benefits:

Experience Matters: Winning in the New Age of Mobility

The auto industry is facing unprecedented change: ride/car-sharing, electrification, autonomous, new ownership models, and more. Each represent huge challenges for an industry not known for being nimble and able to quickly reinvent itself.

Winning will require brands to be obsessed with the experiences they deliver. Differentiation on product alone is no longer enough. Competitive advantage in the age of mobility will be determined by experiences enabled, not features delivered.

Now more than ever, customers want their mobility experiences to be seamless extensions of their lives. New entrants, some with their roots in Silicon Valley, understand this and are designing their business models to remove much of the friction inherent in today’s automotive operating models.

David Mingle, VP of global automotive industries at Qualtrics, will discuss how today’s automotive brands and the mobility companies of the future can learn to listen to their customers and employees, translate those insights into differentiated experiences, build more intelligent and responsive enterprises, and deliver better business outcomes and shareholder value.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Experience matters. Brands that win in CX outperform their peers.

  • Winning mobility experiences must deliver convenience and trust.

  • Brands must develop real-time, data-driven capability to act on customer insight.

Volkswagen Trucks and Buses Journey to Digitization with SAP S/4HANA

Volkswagen Trucks and Buses, aka VWCO in Brazil, is part of TRATON Group and Volkswagen Group. TRATON includes Volkswagen, MAN, and Scania brands of trucks and buses. The digital transformation is part of the company’s strategy with a strong push to adopt SAP best practices. As part of this initiative, Volkswagen Trucks and Buses carefully evaluated competing products but selected SAP S/4HANA as its global SAP system across all plants and operations.

Business challenges include nonstandard processes across different entities in North and Latin America and diverse IT systems and applications. Also, different plants and operations are not aligned with the corporate vision of digital transformation of the entire organization.

SAP S/4HANA was implemented first in Mexico, and the direction from VWCO was to use this implementation as the guiding force and a launchpad to transform the entire company to the digital world. This SAP S/4HANA implementation was highly successful with time and energy spent in innovation, standardizing processes based on SAP best practices, minimizing customization, and adapting to the completely new user experience with SAP Fiori.

Fast Cars, Faster Data: From SAP BW to Real-Time Analytics and Integration Using HANA

FCA's objective was to reengineer business processes for its finance and purchasing departments via a proposed streamlining of SAP architecture with a strategic “sundown” of SAP Business Warehouse.

To address this opportunity, FCA has adopted a solution that empowers SAP HANA data modeling on-premise and SAP Analytics Cloud suites.

Business users, solution designers, and the delivery team are now using intrinsic and powerful features provided by HANA—embedded analytics, HANA hierarchies, calculation, and core data services views—instead of SAP BW. This innovative model provides real-time analytics with SAP Analytics Cloud, including predictive capabilities and enhanced monthly financial closing activities for business stakeholders connecting directly to non-SAP systems like Oracle Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) for reporting and consolidation and Hyperion Essbase for project forecast of commitment and cash investment.

Active Learning Session: It Is Going to Cost How Much? How to Build a Self-Funded SAP S/4HANA Transformation

Imagine your automotive manufacturer says to you that your car will no longer be supported after 2025. What do you do? The impending digital technology wave is looming. Even though CEOs around the world understand the value of “going digital,” approximately half of them don’t understand why they have to invest the same or more to implement SAP S/4HANA as they did for their original SAP implementation. The other half want to do it “right” this time and reimplement (or greenfield) the new SAP S/4HANA digital suite. For both scenarios, the question should be: Is your business ready for this radical change (again), and will it be able to capitalize on the new technology (this time)? In this session, we will discuss what business teams can do to prepare for the new technologies to drive process optimization into the business and increase business adoption through the smart use of SAP S/4HANA technology and transformation approach.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Discuss an approach that challenges the traditional implementation thinking, which builds business confidence and establishes a self-funded SAP S/4HANA transformation.

  • Evaluate the pitfalls of the traditional approach and what organizations can do now to ensure they are able to leverage the new technology (and not fall into implementing SAP S/4HANA to look like ECC or continue having their organization run in Excel).

  • Learn how to reestablish CEO confidence in the adoption of the new technology and the ability for it to be a true competitive advantage.

Social Architectures: Relevance of Connected Business

Real-time technology gives us the potential to connect everything with everything else. In the automotive industry, it is visible on the shop floor, production, customer experience, and certainly in the wider space of “autonomous.”

When we speak about social architectures, we are discussing the combination of processes, data, and values related to a consumer.

Doing these things requires different kinds of end-to-end processes, different ways of relating to consumers, different ways of acting towards competitors, along with knowing that potential consumers in the Internet of Things (IoT) world are also visible to all other participants in the market. Capabilities such as artificial intelligence (A) or blockchain, quantum computing, and open borders in IoT will make different business models and kinds of collaboration possible.

With moving from products to service, we have even more potential if we keep in mind that a connected world will use intelligent sensors and intelligent infrastructure. Then we can anticipate intelligence networks.

Viewing this from an overall perspective, the speaker will give also insights on an automotive SAP S/4HANA greenfield journey.

  • Link to potential business cases and impact on SAP landscapes

Change Management: The What Versus Why

One of the hardest things about managing change—outside of actually managing the change—is ensuring sponsors and leaders appreciate the true importance and necessity of incorporating change management into the overall business and entire lifecycle of initiatives impacting end users. The definition of change management is management of change and development within a business or similar organization. That is “what” change management is, but what about the “why”? Why do we need change management?

As change managers, agents, consultants, practitioners, etc., we have to ensure there is also a clear understanding of the “why” behind change management, not just what change management is or what change management does.

Understanding the “why” behind managing change has more impact, better defining the purpose of change management to our stakeholders, sponsors, and leadership.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Increase probability of project success and ROI.

  • Manage employee resistance to change.

  • Build change competency.
