To inform the agenda for the 2019 Best Practices for Automotive conference, Americas’ SAP Users’ Group (ASUG) surveyed SAP customers in the automotive industry. The participants represented IT and business professionals at leading OEMs and automotive suppliers. In addition, key stakeholders and experts shared insights to further develop and balance our study.
Our findings show that SAP customers in automotive are facing steep competition from global manufacturers as well as new market entrants. As automakers consider their digital strategies, respondents were split over their focus on industry agnostic (53 percent) versus industry-specific considerations (47 percent). SAP automotive customers need as much help optimizing the products they own (44 percent) as they do exploring new ones (40 percent). That’s likely why more than half of respondents (56 percent) are looking at new technology. As they retool for the age of autonomous vehicles, automotive companies are facing a tug of war between spending time and money on today’s technologies, such as analytics, or the next wave of emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI).
